Turning plastic mesh fruit bags into a useable dish scrubber

Citrus is in season which means killer deals on those cute little mandarins that come in wasteful plastic mesh bags. I love my mandarins, but hate the idea of throwing away those bags just minuets after buying the fruit and emptying them into my fruit bowl. So, I came up with a wonderfully easy way to make use of those little mesh plastic bags and feel a bit better about my consumptions of those tasty peal-able packs of sweet nectar.

Make sure you open your bag by untieing or cutting off the knot at the top so you have a nice straight line to start with. Resist the urge to rip a hole in the side of the bag.
Begin by curling the top edge in a few inches, repeat this over and over till you get to the bottom of the bag.
It should look like this. If you like you can stop here and use the scrubber as is, or you can take some thread and stitch the top closed.
On the left is my homemade dish scrubber, and on the right is a store bought scrubber. Both work exactly the same but the one on the left was basically free, and oh-so-simple to make :)

Yay!

  1. Ah, man, just last week I was thinking about how sad it was that I had no use for the bag once I emptied the fruit! I thought of how ugly it was going to look in a landfill. I know better for next time thanks to you!
